In this novel the classical myth of Phaedra and Hippolytus is transformed into a complex story situated in England in the 19th century. It combines elements of detective fiction with a historical setting related to the life of the poet, artist and designer William Morris.

The protagonist, Thomas Markland, is a modern Theseus who, after returning home from a long journey to distant lands, finds that his wife has died in strange circumstances.
While everyone seems to be hiding a terrible secret, Thomas asks himself:
